After a very long 8 Hour Drive, we arrived at our own personal northern Ontario retreat. To us it is our paradise in the northern Ontario's Woods, to others it would be just a shack on a northern Ontario Lake. But the drive is well worth it, the magnificent scenery of the Lake and surroundings is world-class. Actually the locals have titled our lake, Beauty Lake. This Lake is spring fed with a cobblestone bottom, and has a healthy population of Brook and lake trout. From this Lake you can canoe and portage your way many hundreds of miles, through some of northern Ontario's most beautiful landscape.
The day before our departure from Central Ontario we had decided, as soon as we arrived we would go after some of the Brook trout located in our Lake. After unpacking our van, getting the boats and motors into the water and tied up at our floating dock and stringing up the fishing rods, we're ready to go to catch some of these beautiful Brook trout that live in the Lake the that our cabin sits on.
After that 8 Hour Drive we where feeling a bit tired. So we decide to do some still fishing, that way we could relax and unwind in the boat. We decide to investigate the Narrows, which is a bit of a shallow river that runs between the front and back Lake. There are a few locations on the river that have deep holes that hold minnows, which in turn attract the Brook trout. One of the deeper spots is located along the shoreline, so we decided to give that spot a try. As we were pulling up to the spot, we shut off the motor and drifted into the shore. After sitting there for a few minutes, letting things calm down we were ready to go.
We decided that our best plan of attack, and the one that exerted the least amount of effort, would be to do some float fishing. We were using a slip bobber and about 4 pound test line. You try to fish at many depths until you find where the Brook trout are feeding best. So after about 15 minutes, and trying different depths we began to hook some trout. These trout ranged in the eight to sixteen inch range, not exactly trophy brook trout, but great eating size. You see pictures or Brook trout in many magazines and books, but it really doesn't do justice to the beauty of these fish, when you see them in your hands. We fished for couple of hours, and had a real relaxing time.
In the end between the two of us we ended up with about 10 Brook trout. Now the best part of this, is that we will get to try out some awesome Brook trout recipes tonight. Now being a bit on the tired side, we just heated up some beans and fried some onions and potatoes. But you know, combined with those freshly caught Brook trout, it was one heck of a meal.
