Submarined by a Tuna Sub

When I was young and just getting my fork wet in the diet game, I – like many weight-challenged folks – assumed tuna salad was a staple food for the serious slimmer. When I found myself in a sandwich shop at mealtime, I didn’t panic. No, I proudly requested the tuna salad PLEASE and wolfed it down with a mayo-slick smile on my face.

I am here today to tell you that Jared did not lose an ounce dining on the Subway tuna sandwiches. Oh, you hear so much about Subway’s eight sandwiches with 6 grams of fat or less. What you don’t hear is that the good ol’ 6-inch tuna sandwich packs a roll-birthing 31 GRAMS OF FAT!

And I don’t know about you, but it pains Mr. Bad Food to see a counter jockey slice my roll in half and toss the other six inches of soft, yummy goodness in the trash can. Therefore, my belly and I always opt for the full-sized sub and that’s double trouble friends.

With that in mind – and with numbers I shopped from www.subway.com – I discovered my 12-inch tuna sub is torpedoing my tummy with 1,060 calories, 62 grams of fat, 14 grams of saturated fat, 1 gram of that really scary trans fat, 90 milligrams of cholesterol, a thirst-provoking 2,020 milligrams of sodium, 88 grams of carbs, 8 grams of fiber, 14 grams of sugar, and 44 grams of protein.

Add a bag of chips and a soft drink to the meal and you just submarined your intentions to EAT FRESH… oops, I mean to EAT HEALTHY!

Chew on This: Tuna is good food; so too is a real salad of greens and things. But tuna salad – like chicken or egg salad – often includes gobs of high-fat mayo.
