Tuna Salad SEO

"What can I get for you?" The young lady behind the sandwich shop counter asked me. "Tuna salad." I replied. My wife had placed her order just ahead of me, and we were engaged in some light conversation as the sandwich lady worked. She brought out a salad bowl, of the edible type, and I paid no attention, but my wife did, and clued me into what was happening. "No, no, I said politely, I wanted a tuna salad sandwich." "I am sorry sir, but we don't have tuna salad sandwiches" she said, "but I can make a tuna sandwich for you." "That will do." I replied, and she proceeded to make a "tuna salad" sandwich for me.

My wife and I discussed whether this was a cultural, regional, or generational difference. In the end, I think they may all be the same.

The way people search for a particular item on the internet is littered with some of the same hurdles. I offer some examples: A person familiar with the technical side of watering lawns calls that process, irrigation. Most often a person who is not familiar, and interested only in being sure his lawn is watered, would call the same system a sprinkler system. Us old timers, would call the electronic device used to drill a hole in an object, a drill motor, and the part that actually pierces the object is a drill. Most people call the whole ball of wax a drill.

A mechanical system using explosive gases to provide energy for movement, is an engine. A device to provide the same type of movement with electricity is a motor. These days the two are used interchangeably.

As a professional in the horticulture industry, I would search for irrigation heads, a home owner might search for sprinklers. I am involved in outdoor pest control, most folks want to know how to get rid of bugs. There seems to be an automatic penalty for knowing your subject. We need to remember this.

The student of SEO it seems, needs to not only be good at optimizing a sight, and getting links, but also a student of human nature and culture. I offer an example I ran across today. I was working with a website which has a page about tree care, so I went to the keyword tool, and typed in some keywords. One of the terms searched most often was "One Tree Hill" a song from the U2 album "Joshua Tree", which also ranked pretty highly. While I am a long time fan of U2, I could not find a way to work these words in! A generation older than me would have no idea what the reference was about, and probably a generation or two from this age will have the same lack of knowledge. Language is always in a state of flux, and that is a good thing for us to remember as we write and optimize our pages.

Maybe we need to form an SEO Institute for Cultural Linguistics, to keep up with the increasingly rapid changes. Before we start on that project, let me get myself a tuna salad sandwich.
